Capture broad market returns with index fund investing

Many funds that are sector specific or focus on a certain region of the market experience a favorable year when the wind is blowing in their direction. This is often negated over the years when other sectors outperform the asset classes they focus on. Index fund investing is one way to try to capture the movement of the broad market. It is claimed that a low fee index fund is often the best way to go because it roughly mirrors the performance of the broad market indexes.
