Is Debt Consolidatiion the Answer?

I am sure this was very difficult for them to do and I want to help them figure out the right solution to their problems. They have managed to get themselves deeply in debt like millions of other people. They have five or six credit cards that now carry a high balance and they are having a hard time making their monthly payments and their credit rating is suffering because of it. They are considering taking out a debt consolidation loan and would like my opinion regarding this plan. I need to a little bit of research before I can advise them further, but I must admit it sounds like a good plan.
