First, you could buy the insurance plan that is offered by most colleges and universities, but that usually covers trips to their med center only and doesn’t cover your student when they are home on holidays. You can add your student to your current health plan, but if it’s an HMO, your student is limited to seeing the physicians who are in-network. They may need a referral to see a physician while away at school. You can change your plan to a PPO, which provides more flexibilty with regard to healthcare providers. Or you can change your plan to high deductible plan and add an individual health savings plan to make your out-of-pocket expenses tax deductible.
