Unless you use an invisible fence, or an electric shock fence, it will act primarily as a containment method. That said, if you decide to install an electric fence, it may also be useful as an automated training device. As an example, if your dog has a habit of chasing cars, the fence will deliver a shock strong enough to stop the dog from getting out and onto the road. Even though most methods will not require the use of a fence, you may find that it becomes an integral part of any training system that you might choose.
