Why Properly Dispose of Your Hard Drive?

At the landfill, chemicals could leak out and pollute groundwater. At first, I thought that this was also the number-one reason to properly dispose of hard drives. As it turns out, there is a slightly more astonishing reason for proper hard drive disposal, and it should have been obvious to me: identity theft. You should never just throw away an old computer with all its bits and pieces intact. Someone could get their hands on it and steal all kinds of information from you, including your very identity. There are services you can hire to literally shred your hard drive so that it can never be used in any way ever again.
